As Stu indicated, limestone that is tough to polish. Densifier as much as possible and plan on more time than normal to work with this stone. It is extremely porous.

Looks like it could be Italian Rose marble. I would try a hone and polish because it looks like a possible surface residue. . If it is below surface I would use a 35% hydrogen peroxide over 3 thick plain white paper towels. If you have never used peroxide ask for procedures for safety concerns.
