Go with the clear packing tape. You may like to double up. I have used duct tape before and it caught on some of the diamonds.

Zev,

In the past I have used clear packing tape. This has worked well allowing you to hone over the inserts provided  you are not honing too low.

What type of marble are you honing and what grit are you starting at?

If you are starting with a 220 the clear packing tape should work fine.

Process  for taping inserts

1.      Tape over the inserts using a clear packing tape , use a high quality tape ,no cheap stuff.

2.      Tap-e over the inserts

3.      Using a razor blade cut the tape off on the grout line, when applying the tape be sure to be at least even with the grout line when cutting

4.      Once you have cut the tape with the grout line make sure it has stuck to the granite securely.

5.      Hone over the are slowly to make sure the tape does not come up.

6.      If you have trouble with the tape sticking you may want to wipe off the granite inserts with acetone prior to applying the tape, let the acetone dry before trying to apply the tape

7.      Once the job is honed take you single edge razor blade and along the grout line and you should be able to lightly lift off a corner of the tape and remove it

This process is somewhat time consuming but faster than honing around each insert.

Got any pictures , pictures are worth a 1000 words , whenever possible send pictures, several pictures work great.

Once the job is completed then send the before and after pictures, this helps everyone see the problems and the final result

Hi I went to look at a marble floor with black granite inserts. I would like to hone the marble to remove the etching and cover the black granite . What would be the best thing to cover them with that will not come up with my diamond pads?
