I would test on a unsealed uninstalled test tile with a water based dye.Ive never dyed terracotta but Ive dyed travertine and it took quite well. prosoco or increte etc.

Subject: [sccpartners] Staining

Hello everyone, I received this email and was wondering if any one could shed some light on this? Thank you in advace for any help provided.

"Hi ....found you on the internet and was wondering if you could advise.
We have terracotta tiles in a large area of our house ...kitchen, dining,
hall, bathroom, laundry. We don't like them but it appears that it would be a nightmare removing
them.Is there any way we could stain them ....a dark colour, grey or black for
example. Our house is contemporary in design and ideally polished concrete or similar
would have been best when built.

Have you heard of staining terracotta tiles"?
