Slates are produced by low grade regional metamorphism of pelitic sediments of shale, mudstone or fine grained tuff.Slate usually will have a cleft or uneven finish with many layers.

In other words that's the way the slate is and there is really nothing you can do as far as leveling it or sanding it down and there is no type of sealer that will level or fill in the cleft edges.

I am sure it makes a great table to look at but as for being practical for being used to place glasses and things on it's probably not the best choice.Hope this info helps.

I have a slate inlay table that is just beautiful. The problem is the unevenness of the table. Dishes wobble when trying to eat off of them. Is there a way to
put a sealer on the table to even out the surface? I don't think glass is the answer as I feel the unevenness may cause the glass to break if you put pressure
on it. Plexiglass may scratch. Any suggestions?
