the problem is a coating will not stick and if it did maintenance would be a nightmare.  Your gut is correct, put on a pair of Nikes and run away

I explained the refinish scenario to them,now they want me to clean it and find them a miracle in a bottle.They give me some nice jobs so I have to follow it thru.
