I just recently completed such a job a month ago. 
240 diamond brushes, stripper and water as my lubricant.
Finished it with an impregnator. 
1000 sqft took 3 days to do 
Client was thrilled and the results were like a brand new floor

yes, it could be acid burn and it could be a coating. The alkaline cleaner should remove both.
