Jerry,

After viewing the pictures I ‘m assuming the round dark circle is the discoloration your trying to remove.

The first question, how was the signage attached? Was it glued on the travertine?

If the sign was glued on the wall  try cleaning with alkaline stripper  or try some acetone

If that does not work you may need to use an adhesive remover  or a paint stripper

Have you tried cleaning with bleach, perhaps this is mildew that has built up behind the sign over years.

If that does not work try honing it off , you may need to use bleach in you water this may help remove some of the staining.

If possible when sending pictures try to send close up of the problem , the closer you can get the easier it is to see the problem.
