I have used 400 grit HTC Twister pads very successfully on marble floors over the past couple of years to achieve a honed finish.  99% of the time it worked really well and gave a very consistent finish.  That being said, I tried the same on a soft limestone floor last summer and had some real problems with residual artifacts, residual dust gumming up the pores of the limestone and the like. Maybe the HTC pads work better on harder stones than softer ones.  They were, I believe, originally conceived as a cheap way to hone and polish concrete.

I also use them almost daily. and found them to very useful. They work great for evening out bad factory finishes. I'm using the "ECO" brand currently on a limestone restoration, followed by a light pass with small amount of powder. the other brands are to aggressive on this stone. I usually get about 2000-3000 square feet per pad. you need to rinse them off every now and then.

GREETINGS MEN OF THE STONE

I USE THESE PADS ALMOST DAILY, 8 OUT OF 10 JOBS THAT HAVE SLIGHT LIPPAGE THESE PADS WILL REMOVE THE WINDOW PANES. AND THEY GIVE A BEAUTIFUL CUT.

http://www.go2cps.com/Departments/MAINTENANCE-SOLUTIONS/SpinFlex-Diamond-Cleaning-Pads.aspx

THESE PADS HAVE REPLACED THE USE OF HONING POWDERS FOR ME.

NOTE: IF GROUT LOOKS A LITTLE WHITISH AFTER USE, WE USE A LITTLE MURPY SOAP IN THE WATER AS WE SCRUB WITH FLOOR PADS AND THEN BEFORE EXTRACTING WE SCRUB GROUT LINES WITH A GROUT BRUSH THAT ATTACHES TO THE END OF A STICK.

GOOD LUCK

I haven't had the chance to use them and have been looking into those. If anybody has used them, please tell your experiences.  I have spoken to several manufacturers and none of the reps can actually give me any specifics.  Like what are they impregnated with specifically, will they have pieces that flake off and cause scratching, how long do they last, etc.

I would like to add that if picture framing still occurs after doing it the way John suggested, perhaps the lippage is so bad that it really ought to be ground down.

RK;        Ever consider using the Optima pad from VIC or Twister from HTC? No picture frame just a nice finish  - - no acid ever.
