Re #1: Where are you getting your pads? I noticed that some of them are denser the other. Try pick pads from different mfg and see if you get longer life out of them. I am getting mine from PowrFlite and they seem to do just fine.
 
Re #2: Extraction method works very well on this type of floor, especially in the kitchens and dinning rooms. We have done both ways (truck mount and floor machine) the time savings is significant and results are far better.
