I see 2 different staining patterns: on grouted section stains are at the joints (most likely from grout) and on ungrouted section they look like a pancakes. I don't see any copping on top of the wall, what is on the top? I think that moisture got between wall and sandstone and setting material is staining from behind. Cleaning that of course will be a challenge and I wouldn't even try it without drying the wall first.

This is strange. For a friend who is a supplier. There is 3 photo's that say
grouted section. This black started not long after grouting, mainly around
were they cleaned off the grout. It seemed like the grout contaminated the
stone. So 80% of the wall they did not grout and
was looking good until a couple of weeks ago, and now that is starting to go
too.
