This is in Queensland Australia, Bribie Island. I think it was a thinset install, probably w/ dots. I am going to look into black stain types, mold and magnesium (maybe activated by the alkaline in the grout and setting material) Anything else that would show up black? I know ProSoCo has something for magnesium staining (forget the name), do you know what the acid is in this product?

very strange indeed...what color was the grout? how was the stone set? It looks like mold or mildew but cant say for sure..Try taking a couple of drops of bleach and see it removes the black..If it does it is a biological. Where is this located? what part of the country

grouted section. This black started not long after grouting, mainly around
were they cleaned off the grout. It seemed like the grout contaminated the
stone. So 80% of the wall they did not grout and
was looking good until a couple of weeks ago, and now that is starting to go
too.
