Have to agree with you on the word waterproofing..The only way to waterproof the grout would be to paint it with a water proof sealer.  This will water proof it from the top down and not the bottom up. If you do water proof it Ill bet it starts falling apart within a year do to moisture from underneath. best bet would have been to caulk the joints.
