I was skeptical about applying the lifeguard to a slate floor impregnated with the solvent based SBS sealer, but Aldon absolutely recommends it. That being said, they are both Aldon products and maybe they have an additive that allows them both to bond. For a clear glossy topcoat applied directly to a stone floor they recommend crystal glaze, not Lifeguard, and I don't know the difference. A problem i have found with these products is that they always list hazardous materials in the MSDS sheets but do not other contents, so it's  hard to know exactly what's in there sometimes. As an example, the Mexiglaze MSDS lists the paint thinner-like content but doesn't list the (inert?) solids component.  Very frustrating.

Roger and Baird,

If you used a solvent based sealer than you are trying to apply a water based sealer you run a high risk of the water based sealer leaving water beads on top to the stone. this is caused by the pervious sealer repelling the water based sealer.

Baird, to address the sealer you recommend the Lifeguard polymer topcoat is a topical coating that is not recommended to be used on natural stone. you should always seal stone with an impregnating penetrating sealer.

The Mexiglaze sealer this also a topical sealer and was designed for sealing the Mexican clay tiles not for natural stone.

In Roger case the Impregnating sealer was the correct one to use. If you think the stone need sealed again then apply a thin application of a solvent based sealer.  Do an absorption test place water on the stone and if it does not penetrate the stone within 3 to 5 minutes the stone is sealed.

These kinds of products may not always be similar between manufacturers, but the Aldon website says that their Lifeguard (their waterbased polymer topcoat) can be applied to any of their solvent based sealers such as SBS (color-enhancing non-topical sealant) or Mexiglaze and others (I can attest to this from experience).  They say to avoid using a solvent based topcoat on a water based bottom coat.  I have also been told by the Sherwin Williams tech that a waterbased epoxy topcoat can be used on their solvent based original coat but not the other way around.

Today I finished a job taking a polished marble floor to a honed finished. It was crema marfil. I used a color enhancer that was solvent base. I want to go back and apply another application of sealer. For the second application can I use a water based sealer, if so how long do I need to wait before I apply the water based sealer?
