The weep holes in the drain that allow any water under the tiles to drain may be plugged up and keeping the thinset wet.

It may not be acid etchng ,,,it could be salts that are causeing the spalling. However it is possible that body fluids can build up along the drain causing an acidic reaction.  I would repair and make sure they maintain and clean the shower properly

Another question for the day. Just looked @ a fairly new shower floor, about 5 months old. Please see attached pictures. Around the base the limestone feels very rough, like severe etching. I can remove the etching but I’m curious as what is causing the problem.  Could this problem from improper installation and caused by moisture below the tiles? It just seems strange that acid etching would only occur around the drain area.
