Roger,

Are sure the staining is not caused from Plumbers Putty that was used around the facets? The dark stain usually is caused from the use of plumbers putty, not from the caulking materials.

I would mix up a poultice using mineral spirits ( low odor) with DE powders and apply. You will need to have the customer remove the facet so you can remove any materials that are around the facets. When applying your poultice

Be sure to place the poultice materials in the hole for the fixture and on top of the marble around the area that is stained. This will take longer to dry out so plan on leaving the poultice on for at least 2 to 3 days. I would also recommend honing the top where the stain is with a 120 grit diamond. This will open the pores within the stone and allow the poultice to work.

It could take more than 1 or 2 poultices to remove the stain.  Keep in mind that you can never totally guarantee to remove all the staining.

Good luck

Subject: [sccpartners] Staining !

I recently looked at a sink with two faucets with staining issues.  Please see attached pictures. It is my guess that the staining is from caulk or silicone. This is a fairly new installation. It is my understanding methylene chloride should be used in the poultice. I have never worked MC, but I’ve heard it is nasty stuff. Is there any alternative that would work such as hydrogen peroxide?  Thanks in advance for your help! If MC is the only option, will it damage the faucets?
