Don,

In my experience with sanded grout I normally go in with a scrub brush and clean the floor and brush the grout line s to remove any loose grout or sand. Then do my work. In your case you are taking the floor from a polished finished to a honed finish I would not be over concerned. Depending upon the finish I normally use the 250 or the 400 honing p0owders from StoneCare Central. Then when I finished I seal with Stonecare Central Solvent based impregnating sealer

Just put you disclaimer in your contract.

Think about applying a densifier to harden and consolidate the grout a few days before. You'll be grinding it anyway if there is some residue. Then scrub the heck out of it with a brush on your floor machine.

The grout is 3/8" on a cement substrate in a high end high rise. It looks solid and is new. With this info, and expecting little to no deflection, it should be solid if my education is correct. Will put a disclaimer in bid and go with honing powders. Yes or no? on this process? Of course I would test. Thanks.

By the way, how are you feeling Fred.

First take a look at the grout and see how sound it is..I take a knife and poke at it to see if it falls apart easy or not.  If not you might want to try a honing powder. If it is falling apart than you may have issues.  You many want to test an small area.  at last resort you can always remove the grout. How wide are the grout joints?

Good morning All:

I have been asked to bid on 1500 sq' ft of Crema Marfil. It is currently polished and they want it honed. Unfortunately they have used sanded grout. Last experience with this issue, sanded grout,  was not good and I am seeking any options to avoid having a repeat of scratching all over the place. Thanks inn advance.
