Educate them nice and slow, lots of visual aids and some actual pieces of stone and some acidic products to show them etching in progress. And patience.

It's tougher to educate them after you are done.

I understand that there are non-acidic toilet bowl cleaners out there. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can chime in.
