Yes I can put a special sponge together. All you would need to do is tape it on.

Perhaps Dr. Fred can make a special Stain Sponge for these types of stains. You could support the sponge in place against the backsplash with a dumbbell or something heavy or solid that won't damage the countertop.

The stain was made by varnish used to refinish kitchen cabinets. Material - honed travertine, sealed prior to staining. Mineral spirits or goof off cleaned up just a little from the surface but it seams stain penetrated the surface of the stone. Stone was sealed before the staining.
 
Any ideas or suggestions?
