If its a small job, I will tell them it will most likely take 3-5 hours and give them a couple of different reasons why it could possibly take 5 hours, because of problems you may have met in the past. Then I give them an hourly rate, so that way if it takes me 3 hours or 5 hours  they wont be shocked by any price change.
