If it is a new installation- circular spots could be moisture from the installation material

If the installation material is tile glue it will dry

If it is silicone, that’s bad news, silicone has to be removed from the bottom before you can poultice it

If the stains are oil, you can use one of those ready made poultice intended for granite counters to draw it out.

Another great trick is to heat it with a heat gun, if is it is oil and not to deep you can evaporate it

Subject: [sccpartners] STAINS ON SLATE

Hi just got a call from a custy that she has a pc of slate in front of her fire place and it has stains on it. I asked her if it was oil and she said she does not know. Any ideas what it could be and any solutions (I THOUGHT IT COULD BE SMOKE BUT THE STAINS WERE CIRCULAR IN SHAPE)
  THANKS
