Winter is here and many parts of the county are already seeing record snows. Building Maintenance personnel will be breaking out the deicing salts for sidewalks, entranceways, etc. Here's the problem: Most of the deicing salts will crystallize in the pores of any nearby stone, causing severe spalling during the spring and summer. If you want to save your clients a lot of headaches and costly replacement tell them to use salts that will not damage stone and masonry. These non damaging salts usually contain Potassium Chloride. Stay away from Calcium, Magnesium and Sodium Chlorides. I have a great article on this subject on my blog site and will soon have it in our resource section.
