Anthony,

Thank you for the suggestions.

I would not have thought to go dry. It will definitely save time and give me an excuse to use my new Ruwac vacuum I use for concrete.

I’ll give Mb-16 a try unless someone suggests differently.

Depending what finish they put on it,

If the staircase is opened face

Stripping it in itself will be difficult, as the stripping agents will probably damage the paint around it.

But lets say they know that and they understand that they have to paint after your done.

Option 1

I would strip it

Clean it well

Seal it with an Enhancer to give it a rich color, but no more topical sealers.

Inexpensive – doesn’t remove scratches- looks good

Option 2

Sand it dry using diamond technology and with a vacuum no to cause dust

Seal it with an Enhancer to give it a rich color, but no more topical sealers.

Inexpensive – removes all scratches – looks better than option one,

Option 3

Sand it dry using diamond technology and with a vacuum no to cause dust

Then polish it using a compound, just like granite

More costly – finish can be beautiful (you have to test one, not many polish well) –scratches will be just like black marble, in a very high traffic area, this is not recommended.

Hi Fellas,

I am hoping I can tap into your brains for restoring a slate stairwell (actually about 25 stories worth). It is full BLACK SLATE slabs that are a smooth solid surface. They have been maintained over the years with a topical acrylic finish, and my goal is to strip off and provide a natural polish. I have removed scratches from slate, and layers of poly, but never have brought it to a polish. Has anyone brought a similar slate to a polish and what were your methods? ……………..Since slate is so soft and scratch-able, is polishing it even a good idea?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Jason
