Looks like a sandstone. The thickness on a sandstone/flagstone is usually 1inch+. I alkaline clean and acid clean with the malish blue brush.  Usually brush till get a hone type slurry. If its around a pool, I dont seal but any other time I seal with a SBS Sealer from Aldon. You have to spray the stuff with cheap home depot spayers because the methylene chloride eats everything it touches. Usually 2 coats will give you a natural looking color enhancement. The sealer is made for very porous stones and creates no sheen. It's done great for my outdoor applications and mind you, my jobs are usually exposed to the sun and I mean a lot of sun. If yours is not and the climate is more wet I would advise against it.

Hope this helps

I am never a big fan of using sealers outside. first the stone must be dry and in a outside environment that can be difficult. Second, any moisture that is below the stone will need to escape and sealing it could reduce the evaporation rate and could result in the stone spalling. I have seen it many times. Now, I am not saying dont seal it  but it is very risky

I agree..but test first for color bleeding.   Do not seal the outside slate as well.
