Haa. I know what you mean Paul. Whenever people ask me it involves a drawn out explanation. I compare it to wood floor restoration a lot..

PAUL,
Someone suggested you take mom out on a job and show her the before or after. Or take a video of your work and explain to her what you do, you just don’t clean stone you restore its like restoring an old car but you are restoring stone.
OR SEND YOU MOTHER TO TRAINING AND SHE WILL GET THE PICTURE OF WHAT YOU DO REAL QUICK , ONCE SHE GETS BEHIND A FLOOR MACHINE!!!!!

Well,
I've been a stone restoration contractor for about 5 years now. I think I'm getting pretty good at it, or at least my business is growing. That's not the problem. The question today, is what do you tell people when they ask, "what do you do for a living?"
It seems like when I say "I restore stone." they say ".....what ???" or "huh ???" or they say "so you're a mason, right ?"
Then I say "no" and begin to tell them that "I restore stone". It seems that nobody knows or understands what that means...I mean, when I explain it to my customers, they pay me so I guess they get it. But, this afternoon I heard my mother telling her friend that "my son cleans granite". Now anytime I hear someone ask if I can clean their stone I get pissed off.
What do you tell people ???
Am I the only one with this identity crisis ???
