What have you tried in the past?

We have been asked to work on a large pool area with some heavy efflorescence (see pictures). The problem is primarily on the vertical portions of the walls coming from the grout and occasionally from cracks in the ceramic tile.  We've tried a few things with some success, but I'm hoping someone else has some ideas.

How can we best remove this?
Is there a good way to slow this efflorescence in the future? What products would you recommend?
