Tony,
I have had luck using black honing powder on black slate. I use a 120 grit hone the slate then apply a color enhancer sealer. This has worked for me in the past. I would be cautious using any type of dyes

Hi Fred, I have a client that has 40 year old black slate around his swimming pool. It has not been maintained for the past 10 years. he is on the beach, so with the salts, fading and white calcium build up it does not look good. We have experimented using black concrete dye, but with fair results. He just wants to spruce it up a little.
He knows it will not ever look real good again.
