Stephens idea sounds good-cant see why it wouldnt work. Do a test. I guess you dont have to worry about the grout lines.
we havent done travertine but have dyed terracotta using wood stains thinned with paint thinner.Then sealed over the surface with acrylic sealers. They come out pretty good.

Ive done this with reasonble good success. Sanding the tiles to open the pores helped, I used concrete dyes both water and acetone based and kept adding dye as I polished as necessary and then sealed it all in with color enhancer. Akemi make inks for coloring stone but I've not tried it yet.
