Paul,
I agree with Fred 100% this is very risky , you cannot be guarantee that the stone is consistent in the hardness and density of the stone therefore you are not going to be consistent with the finish.
Also you need to be concerned with the sealers that may still be in the stone that will affect how the dyes are absorbed into the travertine.
CAUTION !!! VERY RISKY

I would be a little cautious since the dyes can take differently. Its risky

Stephens idea sounds good-cant see why it wouldnt work. Do a test. I guess you dont have to worry about the grout lines.
we havent done travertine but have dyed terracotta using wood stains thinned with paint thinner. Then sealed over the surface with acrylic sealers. They come out pretty good.

Ive done this with reasonble good success. Sanding the tiles to open the pores helped, I used concrete dyes both water and acetone based and kept adding dye as I polished as necessary and then sealed it all in with color enhancer. Akemi make inks for coloring stone but I've not tried it yet.

Ok folks,
I met with a customer today who wants me to fill and die 1000 square feet of trav.
While I have no problem with filling and grinding, I have no clue about dying....
Anyone ???
