When I restore the floor, I use cardboard and I use duct tape, bout 3" from bottom of the card board (which is touching the floor)

i would also add that the blue tape on the roll will remove paint, so we first put the faux finish blue tape, then the plastic  with the tape, then cover that with duct tape or stucco tape..
