Did you use diamonds or impregnating pads? To remove bad etching you start with 220 diamonds. The way you describe the issue it sounds like you used pads not diamonds and they live kind of textured finish. so I will suggest to stick to diamonds and it will see a big difference

   Upon closer inspection, while the factory finish appears flat as glass, the polished area seems microscopically pitted. Not like an orange peel... much smaller. I don't know if this is the cause of the lack of clarity.
