This is common problem with white marble. Your client is probably correct. The rusting is coming from within the stone. Based on the photos I would say replacement is the only option. See my article on iron oxidation in the articles section on stoneandtilepros.com to show your client

I have this potential client and her marble is rusting. The husband is a know it all and assures me there wasn't any rebar used underneath.  Wife says it gradually started to spread. Any ideas to fix or if its a lost cause.
