We have used a straight edge and level but not sure it always helped.
If you have a really rigid setup you may be able to feel it.

I think using a stiff/ridgid pad driver and no flex in the diamonds like mike said is the way to go.
I might add starting with 120 metals though 400 metals may help.
Check flatness after your first cut. After metals go to 220 resin and up.
Test an area.
Down play results and over perform.
