Labor issues are always a problem Adam. I find it to be the most challenging part of our business. Health insurance was always a benefit that we provided but employees don't really see the value of the $660 per month that we pay for individuals. I always have a help wanted sign on our door. I will always entertain qualified people. I prefer that they know nothing so that we can train them our way. They will always be overworked and underpaid while we line our pockets with our 100% profit. Remember they believe you have no expenses. When we were located in a lower middle class neighborhood (1949-1993) our pool of applicants was huge. Since 1993 we are located in an industrial park only blocks from an upper middle class area. Kids here are driving $50,000 cars in high school. Even the ones that don't go to college don't want to work because they don't see entry level as an opportunity. I understand from business people I deal with around the country, that middle America is an easier place to find labor. Big cities like mine, New York, offer challenges to a business located where we are. Had I relocated to an area where people are immigrants, I would have a better work force. I hate to sound so pessimistic but as I said this is my most frustrating daily challenge. Jack Welsh had it right. Fire your lower 10% of employees each year.

Adam, getting the right people is tough.    Right now I have a great crew, pay them well and I give bonuses for finishing ahead of schedule, being on time, progressive planning etc, heck changing of attitude.   My crew had been with me for over 2 yrs

With the website generating so much work ( thanks Debbie and stone tile pros crew)I'm thinking of showing them were are expenses go and creating a workers fund.  We the company will decide what to do with this money, Xmas fund, 401 k , upgrade eq it will be a company deciding not one individual

Guys and gals,
More often then not, when we loose an employee and we struggle with finding a replacement. We already gave up on finding candidates with an experience and we look for somebody that we can train and mold to our needs. Now, we have a problem finding even those, entry level candidates. We use local newspapers, Craig's list, word of mouth, etc.

1. I am wondering if you have any "honey holes" where you found good candidates/employees from?
2. What incentives do you use to attract them (insurance, bonuses etc)?
3. I know, that pay depends on the region but what hourly rate do you offer?
