The grout is probably cracking because the floor is flexing …… I had a situation similar a couple years back. I didn’t know that part of the install (about 100 sq ft) was on a plywood substrate at the time. Customer knew about the plywood floor but did not disclose, I refused to continue until I had a signed release. Customer refused to sign the release, so I walked ….. Customer hired another  company to finish the job, no release. The tiles didn’t come up but the substrate warped from the Saltillo holding  moisture and the floor had to be replaced. You are correct, it’s a bad idea.

Good Luck,

Subject: [sccpartners] Saltillo Tiles

Good morning All:

Custy has about 1300 sq' of saltillo tiles, 20 years old on plywood subfloor, wire mesh, mud install. Extreme lippage, with an old sealant on it. she would like them ground level, grout fixed. I explained that this was a bad idea due to the inconsistency of install. Am I correct or can this be ground down? Help is appreciated.
