It is not the size of the grout line but rather the type of grout. If you can get it to stick to the grout then it is good. I believe they are designed to be used on sanded grout but I have used it on unsanded, even an epoxy grout from laticrete

It also makes the grout a uniform color. Sometimes even brand new grout can be different shades from different lots.
Some of them contain an antimicrobial.
