This is refered to spalling of the vein.  It can have numerous causes,  improper cleaning chemicals, moisture migration, acid polishing that was not neutralzed well enough or over crystalizing when polishing.  Also has the stone ever been wax and stripped in the past this also can cause problems.   If this is in San Diego I would be happy to look at it to see what may have caused it or how well it can be restored.
