You can try refinishing the top with diamond abrasives.
You may need to start with a light metal or copper cut.
Be careful not to dip-start with the lighter one.
Alpha makes some great metal pads for hand machines.
Once you cut into it you will know better what you have.
It may be that the metal residue didn't get the far into the surface.
