Pat, I had one a few years back. It seemed to had some type of sealer that was allowed to dry on it. I can not say what it was but we went in for Walker Zanger  to see what we could do.  We cleaned it with a  degreaser using a a 3m green pad to remove what was ever on the surface and it took care of the problem.  When we cleaned it the tile was lighter when we got done so it seemed to me that something was put on but it would not scrape off with a blade and really showed no  visual signs of anything but even water would leave marks prior to our cleaning.
   Hope this helps.

Did anybody ever see something like this happen on a new Porcelain floor. They said it is a spill from coffee.
Then the tile supplier recommended cleaning with Aqua Mix tile & grout cleaner (alkaline) and the same thing happened.
No residue on surface, can't feel a difference on tiles, if you wet it, it darkens for a split second
