Blain,
Do a test.
Try some 5X Gold, 10X DiaBrite or similar with the center of a natural pad. Do it wet in a sink with a rubber drain pad and plenty of rags as cushioning to hold it.
Do a test.
Hopefully, the polishing powder will do the trick so you won't have to wet sand it with wet sandpaper first.

In the attached picture, the small elephant in the foreground did not get the vinegar treatment and is an example of what she suggested the other larger ones in the background used to look like. They are about 6-8" tall. Small project, but I'm sure it will be very tedious. They have sentimental value to her, rather than $$$ value.
