A neutral cleaner will not neutralize an acid, it will just dilute it. You need to use the opposite, ie an alkaline.

It sounds like you could be using too much powder or that stone could be very acid sensitive. Do you have enough  neutral cleaner in your water barrier? You could also try other polishing compounds. MB-22 works great in situation like this.
