We have a company here that sells soda blasting equipment and I went to a demonstration day recently.  They showed me how it easily takes paint off of wood without hurting the wood underneath and can also clean a limestone facade.  The one machine (called an ibix) can blast a number of different media including soda (the least aggressive), walnut shells, glass beads and other things. You can rent the equipment.  Need to get the ibix, an air compressor and the media.  Its all pretty expensive, with the machinery rental running around $1000 per day more or less, and the media at $50 a large bag.  The soda just disappears after blasting, but not the shells or glass beads, so there is some clean up involved.  It is a dry process.
The same people also showed us a machine that blasts rust off of metal with dry ice.  This is all pretty amazing but expensive to purchase and only use once in a while.

That is another reason we are trying to get away from that – paying a company to remove the waste. I know there is a company here in AZ that prefers the soda blasting method. Curious if anyone else here has tried that. We also have used acrylic strippers (if it is a thin coat, etc.) basically using meth-chloride as the last resort.

Thank you, we appreciate your business!

Everybody needs to remember that when you're removing coatings with methylene chloride or using other harsh strippers. This stuff cannot be flushed down the toilet and should be taken off site and disposed of properly. If you think you're having problems removing a coating wait until you see the problems you have when dealing with the EPA or your local municipalities if you get caught

We do coating stripping all the time on Mex-Pavers and stone using Methylene chloride with no problems as long as you use the right one,  have ventilation and charge enough for it, but we have had our “ brain numbing choking experiances to to t oto.”  So I don’t blame you. But Friday we masked off to do a coating strip with Meth-chloride and one of my techs did a test first with this stuff we call “BLUE STONE SOAP”. It stripped it right off. But of course it wasn’t that thick either. Its called “Specialty Cleaner 6106” from DB Water Tech, Alen Bateman 1(480)838-9004. I think its like $1,400? For a 55 Gal drum. It’s a very high alkaline water base stripper. Diluted down we use it for so many things. But full strength it’s the strongest water base stripper I’ve ever used. After 15 minutes we scrub with a 20” 50grit nylon bristle scrub pad and do a high pressure hot water Vacuum extraction. With the truck.

Hi Partners,

What are your recommendations on removing topical coatings? We have used the paint stripper with methylene chloride, but would like to get away from that. We have heard soda blasting can be effective. Any info/advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
