Hard to tell what it is from the pic-while its possible the HO bought this as a honed or brushed quartzite.(quartz is usually sold as engineered stone).  If the surface is etching it just may be a dolomitic marble.
It could be a few things going on here.(do a little google research on Quartzites-you will be enlightened)
So you need to run a few tests.
It could be brushed or antiqued-and sealed or color enhanced. The sealer may be etching and not the stone.
Test for a coating or sealer using a single edge razor blade or some methylene chloride(paint stripper)
Great to keep some in the truck or car.
Once you know your are at the surface of the stone-test for hardness.
True quartzite is crazy hard-take a piece of glass and try to scratch the surface.
If you can scratch it -it isn't quartzite.
Test the actual stones surface for acid sensitivity.
If the stone etches you have a marble.
If you feel a textured surface or a not flat surface you will need to refinish with brushes.

That could be.

Could this be an antique finish on the surface?

It appears to be etched. The texture of the stone is uneven and not really smooth with small pits everywhere that gather soil.

This appears to be quartz. You need to treat it like granite. Normally you don’t get etching on quartz? Are you sure it’s etched or is it the stone?

Partners this stone was sold to the customer as Quartz. It looks like a honed marble with etching and small pits all over the stone. The surface is not smooth but more of a contoured wavy finish. Any thoughts would be great!

Thank you!
