Hey Ryan,

Situations like this pop up for us all the time-Manhattan Marble I believe is porcelain

Its actually called Manhattan tile-Is that what it looks like-

There isn't a  marble I know that will hold up too Muriatic acid.

You can test for a coating by using a single edge razor(a new sharp one)

Does it look like this below-

Ryan,

If there is a coating on it then that’s why it did not react. Have you tried to strip the surface with and alkaline based stripper or a stripper to remove urethane or epoxy coating? if there is no coating on the surface then you have another something other than marble. Unless the marble has a factory coating baked into and onto the stone surface. if this is on the stone then you will need to hone it with a 50 grit then 120. Leaving the surface at a 120 will make the surface less slippery. However you may lose some of the color of the stone from the stone.

John,

We were under the same impression. The builder and the homeowner were VERY insistent that it is marble… Could there be something on it, like Tuff-Skin or something similar? We saw no sign of a topical coating, but the lack of reaction is leaving us scratching our heads…

If you used Muriatic acid and there was no reaction you are not dealing with a marble product. Marble is a calcium carbonite product and acids will react with all marble.

Are you sure you are not dealing with a porcelain tiles that looks like marble? If it is a porcelain tile then you probably need to diamond hone it or try some other acid based anti slip products.

Subject: Non-Slip Treatment on Manhattan Marble

Hey everyone!

We have a homeowner with a Manhattan marble shower that the floor pan is slippery. They want it to be as slip resistant as possible. We have tried invisi-tread with no result at all as well as a 50/50 mix of muriatic acid/water and it didn’t etch the surface or even show any signs of a reaction.  Any ideas?

Thank you!!
