Well noted-I think Fred might be able to guide you better in that direction of ratings for stone.
This is what I found on the web(no way to know its validity)
"Bateig Azul is a biocalcerinite extracted in Alicante Province (Spain) which is used as an ornamental stone in both new-build construction as well as cladding for existing buildings of note. The stone has received a seal of quality, conferred upon it by the Applied Petrology Laboratory at the University of Alicante, which has studied its petrology and physical characteristics in depth. The stone is remarkable due to its mechanical properties as well as its high level of homogeneity of colour which is maintained throughout. Bateig Blue is also noteworthy for its outstanding behaviour under freeze-thaw conditions."
We have seen occasional issues like this with limestone and other stones as well.
What type of drainage was installed in the upper deck-it is possible within the deck you have a load of moisture. I no longer even look at exterior or basement installations without taking moisture readings.
It has saved my butt over and over again. Not to mention bringing clients back to reality and respect you.
I always mention to clients about the pro's and cons of sealing along with the importance of the installation. I think the limestone should have been mounted on pedestals with open joints but not sure.
When ever we get any job where there is a rush or demands that could be considered irrational we really consider working with those clients.
Besides pricing and deposits going higher if we do decide to take on the job we write our concerns into the contract.

The rain and damp weather held up the job for weeks. As far as a moisture meter reading It would not have made a difference because it looked dry and more rain was coming and the GC, customer, designer was not going to wait. 
But again does any one know of a stone rating guide system that confirms that this stone was not suitable for exterior freeze & thaw weather?

I have a feeling you will be getting high readings.
I would think the sealer had nothing to do with why this happened .
However sealing stones that are positive for moisture can be an issue.
It is like a barrier for moisture getting out.
Moisture from above isnt generally the cause of spalling its moisture from below.

Hey Pro's 

I have a job that has Brushed Bateig blue Limestone Tiles 18x18 installed on an upper exterior deck. Lots of trees not a lot of direct sun light. Wet wooded area. In Orinda, central California 

The brand new installed tiles are starting to Spall. 

I sealed it with 511 Pours Plus. 

Water absorbs into small micro veins it freezes then pops out little chips. Then it looks black under because no sealer


The Limestone was Purchased from Annsacks.com by the customer or designer. 


The web site says its rated for exterior use and also freezing and thaw temperatures. 


Does any one know any other rating source I can find to back that up?

The GC said this customer has been extremely difficult on all aspects of construction and will probably try to make any one who ever worked on it or touched it pay for a new tear out & instal. 

Also has anyone seen this or know how to prevent it?
