Hi Tony My vote is engineered.  I have been maintaining 20 year old engineered stone at a casino and we get etched.  Something about the dark spots don't seem like crystals to me.  How hard is it.  The resins aren't as hard most of the time.  Maybe a strong fingernail will show scratches.  Is it cold or slightly cooler than ambient?   Hope that helps.
