Try removing a light etch with polishing compound.
Some engineered imported materials are mixed with marble and can etch.
We have worked on many.
If that is the case they are quite easy to work using resin diamonds and polishing compounds

My vote is engineered.  I have been maintaining 20 year old engineered stone at a casino and we get etched.  Something about the dark spots don't seem like crystals to me.  How hard is it.  The resins aren't as hard most of the time.  Maybe a strong fingernail will show scratches.  Is it cold or slightly cooler than ambient?   Hope that helps.
