That would depend on the level of soiling, grease, and buildup. A natural pad or white pad will normally be very effective. Let the alkaline cleaner dwell for a few minutes, so it can break down the oil and grease that has penetrated into the slate. If you are using any type of hand tool or spinner/extractor, use low speed and/or low pressure, as slate will often shed some of the top layer.

It's possible that they have applied a topical sealer, which would make the process much easier.
