Is there anything you would recommend we try (iron out poultice?) that is worth the time and will achieve any worthwhile results - “Band-aide on a bullet wound”?
Or are we fighting nature and there is nothing we can do of value to remedy it?

I run into this problem all the time..The attached article should explain it. To sum up..Its the natural iron oxides in the stone that are rusting.
