I agree with Fred and just want to add that its possible the granite was originally a honed finish?
This would mean that while it can be done it will require some experience.
Send in some pics of the counter and or tell us what granite it is.
If the surface is scratched that may require some honing-the hard water is pretty straight forward to remove.
