While some slates can be porous many others are non porous(such as roofing quality slate) most likely a chemical company would be using soapstone or roofing quality slate.

Although porous, slate is pretty much bulletproof. Alkaline cleaner, scrub, extract, dry, multiple coats of penetrating sealer. Done.
